How Should a Men's Sweater Fit?

· Maverre Maison

A sweater lives or dies on fit. Get these four points right and it will look considered every time you reach for it.

1. Shoulders

The seam should sit right at the edge of your shoulder — not halfway down your arm, not pulling across the top. This is the hardest thing to alter, so it's the first thing to check.

2. Chest

You want a clean line with a little room to layer — no pulling across the buttons of a shirt beneath, no excess fabric ballooning out. A slim knit like The Alpine Crewneck should skim, not cling.

3. Length

The hem should land around your waistband, covering the belt line but not extending far onto the hips. Too long looks borrowed; too short rides up when you move.

4. Sleeves

Cuffs should end at the wrist bone, with maybe a centimetre of shirt cuff showing beneath. If they swallow your hands, size down or choose a slimmer cut.

Getting it right online

Measure a sweater you already love, lay it flat, and compare chest and length to the size chart rather than guessing. Maverre knits like The Crewneck Knit are cut true to size in S–3XL, and free 30-day exchanges cover you if you're between sizes. Browse men's knitwear.
