What to Wear to a Christmas Party: A Calm Guide for Men and Women

· Maverre Maison

Most Christmas party advice asks you to buy something you will wear once. The better approach is quieter: take the pieces you already reach for, and lift them one notch. Texture instead of sparkle. A darker palette. Shoes that have been polished.

Here is how that looks in practice.

First, read the invitation

There are really three kinds of holiday party, and they ask for different things.

The office dinner. Smart-casual, usually in a restaurant. Colleagues will notice if you overdress more than if you underdress.

The house party. Warm rooms, standing all evening, a coat pile by the door. Layers you can shed matter more than anything else.

Black tie. A dinner jacket or a floor-length dress. We will be honest here: Maverre does not sell formal suiting or black tie. If that is your invitation, this guide is not the one you need.

Men: a fine knit over dark trousers

The single most reliable holiday outfit for men is a good knit and a dark trouser. It is warm, it photographs well, and it does not look like you are wearing a costume.

Start with the Slim Mock-Neck Quarter-Zip Sweater, known in the range as The Quarter-Zip Knit. The mock neck does the job a collar and tie used to do, without the formality. For a softer look, the Textured Jacquard Crewneck Sweater carries pattern in the weave rather than in the colour, which is exactly the kind of quiet detail that reads as expensive across a dim room.

Underneath, the Executive Trousers give you a straight leg and a clean line. If the evening is looser, the Mercer Trousers in a slim tapered cut work just as well with a knit.

Finish with the Business Loafers. Trainers will undercut the whole thing.

If you are travelling to the party rather than going straight from the office, the Slim Matte Bomber Jacket is the outer layer that will not flatten your knit underneath.

Women: let one piece do the work

The fastest route to a finished look is a single piece that needs nothing added to it.

The Jacquard Knit Dress, The Élan Knit Dress in the range, is the easiest of these. Knit holds its shape through a long evening and does not crease when you sit down to eat. Pair it with the Leather-Look Side-Zip Ankle Boots and you are done.

For something with more line to it, the Chic Tailored Jumpsuit has a V-neck and soft stretch, which is a useful combination when dinner runs long. The Leather-Look Tailored Blazer goes over either one when the room cools down.

If you would rather build from separates, the Velvet-Feel Relaxed Shirt brings festive texture without shine. Wear it with the Cotton Slim Trousers with Pockets for something that will still look right on an ordinary Thursday.

The palette that works every year

Two or three quiet shades, and one texture doing the talking. Deep neutrals photograph better under warm restaurant light than anything bright. If you want to signal the season, do it through material, not colour: a jacquard weave, a velvet hand, a leather-look finish.

The test is simple. Would you wear the same outfit to a good dinner in February? If yes, it is a sound buy. If no, it is a costume.

On sizing

Maverre sizes are shown in EU. Every product page carries the Fit Atelier, which recommends a size from your height and weight. Worth two minutes before you order, particularly on knitwear, where the difference between Regular Fit and Slim Fit changes how a piece layers.

What we do not sell

We would rather be useful than complete. Maverre does not carry men's suits, dinner jackets, floor-length gowns or sequins. If your party calls for those, buy them elsewhere. What the range does well is the large middle ground where most holiday parties actually sit: knitwear, trousers, a dress or jumpsuit that works, and shoes that hold up.

Most of the range sits under €80, and nearly all of it will still be in rotation when the decorations come down.
