Is a Bomber Jacket Good for Autumn?

· Maverre Maison

Is a bomber jacket good for autumn? Yes, within limits. A bomber is a light, close-cut layer, which makes it ideal for the first half of the season and less suited to the second. Knowing where that line falls is the difference between a jacket you reach for daily and one that stays on the hanger from November. This guide sets out what a bomber does well, where it stops, and how to choose one that works with the knits you already own.

When is a bomber jacket warm enough?

A bomber is a mid-layer in disguise. It has little or no insulation, so its warmth comes from what you wear underneath and from the ribbed cuffs and hem, which hold air close to the body and block draughts at the wrists and waist. As a rough guide, a bomber over a lightweight knit is comfortable from about 10°C to the high teens. Below that, you will want a heavier knit, a scarf, or a different jacket.

Test it the way you would test any layer: stand outside for five minutes in the clothes you plan to wear. If your hands are warm but your chest is cold, add a knit. If your whole body is cold, the jacket is the wrong weight for the day, not the wrong jacket.

What does a bomber do well in autumn?

It cuts wind, sheds light drizzle depending on the finish, and sits short enough to show a clean line over trousers. The short length is deliberate; we explain why in Why Are Bomber Jackets Short? It also takes a knit comfortably, provided the cut leaves room at the shoulder.

The Bomber Jacket is built on that idea: a clean baseball silhouette with a matte finish, tonal ribbing and no badges. It is cut as a Slim Fit through the body with easy room at the shoulder, so a lightweight crewneck such as The Alpine Crewneck sits underneath without pulling across the back. Both Black and Blue suit the autumn palette of navy, charcoal and olive.

Where does a bomber fall short?

Three places. First, it does not cover the hips, so in steady rain or a cold wind your legs and lower back are exposed. Second, an unlined or lightly lined bomber has a ceiling: once the temperature stays below about 8°C, it works only with a thick knit. Third, the slim body that makes it look sharp leaves little room for chunky knitwear. If you wear heavy sweaters, size for the sweater, or choose a longer, roomier layer such as an overshirt or a coat.

If you are weighing a bomber against a structured option, Bomber vs Blazer compares the two directly.

What should you wear with a bomber jacket?

Keep the layers beneath it simple and close in tone. A plain tee, a fine-gauge knit or a quarter-zip all work; a heavy hoodie crowds the shoulders and breaks the line. For trousers, a straight or slim cut in a darker shade than the jacket keeps the proportion balanced, and leather or leather-look boots or clean low trainers finish it. We cover this in more detail in What to Wear Under a Bomber Jacket.

For women, the same rules apply. A bomber over a fine knit with straight trousers is the base; if you want a more structured shape, The Monroe Blazer and The Solis Jacket in the women's jackets collection offer lighter alternatives in the same spirit.

How to choose one that lasts the season

Check three details before you buy. The ribbing should spring back when you stretch it, because loose ribbing lets the jacket ride up. The zip should run smoothly and sit flat when closed. And the shoulder seam should land at the edge of your shoulder, not below it.
