How to Style a Quarter-Zip Sweater

· Maverre Maison

A quarter-zip sits between a sweatshirt and a jumper, and it takes its tone from whatever you put around it. That flexibility is also why it goes wrong so often. This guide covers how to style a quarter-zip sweater so it reads deliberate rather than borrowed from the golf course: with jeans, with trousers, tucked or not, and in women's wardrobes, where the relaxed half-zip has become one of the season's most useful knits.

Start with the knit itself. A fine-gauge quarter-zip with a mock neck dresses up; a thick fleece one does not, however carefully you style it. The Quarter-Zip Knit is cut slim in a lightweight, fine-gauge knit, which is what lets everything below work.

How to style a quarter-zip sweater with jeans

Denim is where most people first wear a quarter-zip, and it is the easiest pairing to get right. Keep the jeans dark and the leg straight or slim. A dark indigo wash sits at the same level of formality as a fine knit; a pale, distressed jean pulls the whole outfit towards the weekend, which is fine if that is the aim.

Underneath, choose one of two things. A plain white or grey tee works if its neckline sits below the zip, so it stays hidden when you open the collar. A collared shirt works if you set the zip low enough for the collar points to sit outside the knit. Do not wear a crew tee with the zip wide open: two necklines stacked on top of each other look accidental.

Finish with clean leather trainers or a suede boot. Add a jacket only if it ends level with the knit's hem. The Bomber Jacket works because it stops at the hip, on the same line as the sweater.

What kind of pants should I wear with a quarter-zip sweater?

Straight or tapered trousers with a mid or high rise. The quarter-zip is a short, neat top, so it needs a clean leg below it and a waistband that meets its hem without any shirt showing between the two.

Chinos are the default. Stone, khaki and navy all work, and a tonal pairing, such as a beige knit over stone trousers, is the quickest way to look put-together. For the office, move to a pressed trouser. The Mercer Trousers are cut slim and tapered, which suits the proportion of a fitted knit.

Avoid very wide legs and heavy cargo pockets. They add volume below a top that has none, and the outfit ends up bottom-heavy. Joggers in the same colour as the knit can work for a travel day, but that is a comfort outfit rather than a styled one. The men's trousers collection is the place to compare leg shapes side by side.

Should a quarter-zip be tucked or untucked?

Untucked, almost always. A quarter-zip is finished with a ribbed hem that sits at the top of the hip, and it is meant to be seen. Tucking it in creates bulk at the waistband and pulls the zip off-centre every time you sit down.

The exception is a high-waisted trouser, where a partial front tuck can show the waist. That works with fine-gauge knits only, and more often in women's styling than men's. If the hem hangs more than a few centimetres below your belt, the problem is fit rather than styling: the sweater is too long, and tucking will not hide it.

As for the collar, keep it down indoors. We explain why, along with the shirt-underneath question, on our Style Answers page.

How to style a quarter-zip sweater for women

For women, the relaxed half-zip is often the more useful shape. The Willow Zip Knit is a soft, medium-weight knit in a relaxed pullover cut, which opens up a different set of options from a slim men's style.

Three combinations cover most weeks. First, over a white tee with straight jeans and loafers, zip half open: the easiest weekend outfit there is. Second, zip closed over tailored trousers under a long coat, where the mock neck does the work a scarf would. Third, under a structured jacket. The relaxed body can be half-tucked at the front, and a leather-look blazer such as The Monroe Blazer sharpens the shoulder line.

Colour sets the tone. Light and dark grey read calm and office-friendly; apricot and rose red are warmer and do more work on their own, so keep the rest of the outfit neutral when you wear them. If you are building around a pale knit, our companion guide on what to wear with a white sweater covers colour pairings in detail.

The short version

Buy the finest knit you can, keep the trouser clean and straight, leave the hem out, and decide what shows at the neck before you leave the house. A quarter-zip that follows those four rules looks at home at a desk, at dinner and on a train. The full range sits in the sweaters collection.
