A white sweater is the lightest thing most people own in autumn, and that is exactly its value: it brightens a season built on navy, brown and charcoal. It also shows every mistake in the outfit around it. This guide answers what to wear with a white sweater, starting with the trousers, then the pairings that work for men and for women, and finishing with how to keep a white knit white once you own one.
One principle runs through all of it. White is a high-contrast colour, so the outfit works when you decide how much contrast you want, and fails when you leave it to chance.
What colour pants go best with a white sweater?
Four colours cover almost every occasion, and each gives a different level of contrast.
Navy is the safest. It is dark enough to anchor the white without the hard edge of black, and it suits office and weekend alike. Brown and tan are the warmest choice and the most autumnal; a white knit over chestnut or caramel trousers is a classic for good reason. Stone and beige create a soft, tonal outfit with almost no contrast, which reads calm and expensive but needs texture, such as a suede shoe or a leather belt, to avoid looking flat. Black gives the sharpest contrast and suits evenings; keep the rest of the outfit equally clean.
Denim sits between these. Dark indigo behaves like navy. Light-wash denim with a white knit is a spring combination, and it can look out of season by November.
What to wear with a white sweater for men
Start with the knit's weight. A lightweight, slim crewneck such as The Alpine Crewneck in White layers under a jacket without bulk, so it can carry a whole outfit or sit quietly under outerwear. The Bennett Sleeve in White gives a similar clean front in a slim long-sleeve pullover.
Three combinations work reliably:
Weekend. White crewneck, dark straight jeans, brown suede boots. Add a navy or black jacket that ends at the hip. The Bomber Jacket in Blue keeps the contrast soft; in Black it sharpens the outfit.
Smart casual. White knit over a pale blue shirt, collar points out, with navy or grey trousers and leather shoes. A white Quarter-Zip Knit does the same job with a mock neck, and makes the shirt optional.
Tonal. White on cream on stone, with one darker accent in the shoes. It is the hardest of the three to get right, and the most rewarding when you do.
Whatever sits underneath must be invisible or deliberate. A grey tee showing through a thin white knit looks like a mistake, so choose a white or skin-tone base layer instead.
What to wear with a white sweater for women
The same contrast logic applies, with more room to play with shape. A relaxed white knit tucked at the front into high-waisted dark trousers gives the clearest line. A longer white jumper over straight jeans and ankle boots is the everyday version.
Outerwear does most of the work in autumn. A white knit under a camel or apricot jacket, such as The Solis Jacket in Apricot, makes a warm, low-contrast outfit. Under a dark or strongly coloured leather-look blazer, such as The Monroe Blazer in Black, Green or Red, the white knit becomes the calm base that lets the jacket lead. The women's jackets collection shows the full colour range.
Avoid pairing white knitwear with an off-white or ivory skirt or trouser unless the difference is obviously intentional. Two whites that nearly match make both look slightly grubby.
How to keep a white sweater white
White knitwear yellows for three reasons: body oils and deodorant left in the fibre, heat, and washing with coloured loads. Deal with all three and a white sweater stays bright for years.
Wear a thin base layer underneath so less sweat and deodorant reaches the knit. Wash whites only with whites, inside out, at 30°C, and use a liquid detergent without optical brightener if the care label advises against it. For stains or dullness, soak in an oxygen-based whitener rather than chlorine bleach, which can weaken fibres and leave synthetics yellow. Dry flat, away from radiators and direct sun, and never in a tumble dryer. Heat sets stains and relaxes the knit.
Finally, store it clean. Stains you cannot see in September oxidise into yellow marks by spring. For more specific care questions, from pilling to moth protection, see our Style Answers library.
