Ask ten people whether a quarter zip counts as business casual and you will get ten answers. The honest position: in most modern offices, yes — a quarter zip is business casual, provided it is a fine-gauge knit rather than a fleece, and provided what sits under and below it is considered. The garment itself is neutral. The context around it decides how the room reads it. Below is how to judge that context, and how to build the outfit so the question never comes up.
Is a quarter zip OK for business casual?
In a modern office, almost always. The exceptions are narrow and worth knowing.
What tips a quarter zip out of business casual is rarely the zip. It is the fabric. A brushed fleece or a heavy performance knit with a visible logo reads as gym kit, and no styling recovers it. A fine-gauge knit in a matte yarn reads as knitwear, and knitwear has been office-appropriate for a century. A quarter zip reads more adaptable. Because the neckline changes with the zip, one garment covers a cold morning meeting and a warm afternoon desk without a second layer. That flexibility is the whole argument for it.

Is a quarter zip and jeans business casual?

A dark, clean, straight-leg jean with no distressing and no fading can sit inside business casual in a creative or tech office. Add a collared shirt under the knit and a leather shoe and it holds. Light washes, rips, heavy whiskering or a loose leg move the outfit into weekend territory, and the quarter zip goes with it.

So does clothing that is visibly worn out — a pilled knit or a scuffed shoe undoes more than a slightly casual silhouette ever will.
The useful test is not whether a garment is allowed. It is whether the outfit looks decided. A quarter zip in a good knit, over a collar, above a trouser, with a clean shoe, looks decided.
